A Timeline for Applying to Graduate School

The process of applying to graduate school can seem overwhelming; for some, however, it may help to break down the process in smaller parts and tackle each step individually. If you're thinking about applying, review our example timeline (for fall admission) to get an idea about what steps to take and when to take them. Every school and program are different — to start, some programs offer spring admission — so you'll need to adjust the timeline accordingly, ideally giving yourself a year for a stress-free assembly of materials.

Summer 2023

Review your preferred program(s) and the corresponding application requirementspolicies, and deadlines. Begin working on the necessary documents, such as resumes, CVs, and statements of purpose. If necessary, take the GRE or GMAT, and contact your references for your letters of recommendation.

 Fall 2023

Submit your application(s) and all required application materials for admission and funding opportunities, if available.

 Spring 2024

Receive your decision. If admitted, begin reviewing external funding opportunities as well.

 Fall 2024

Congratulate yourself! You are officially a graduate student. Continue looking for awards, internships, scholarships, and grants to help fund your studies and participate in conferences and other academic competitions and workshops to enhance your professional development and your resume!

If you require accommodations due to a disability in order to participate, please contact 512.245.2281 at least 72 hours in advance of the event.
