Program Mission

Since its foundation as a normal school in 1899, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction has been an integral part of Texas State University, serving the state's need for trained public school teachers. Over the years, the programs have prepared knowledgeable and effective teachers who are responsive to the varying needs of society. The department has forged strong working partnerships with many Texas school districts, providing a diverse landscape for fieldwork and potential employment opportunities. Between rigorous curriculum and valuable experience, the department has grown to become one of the largest nationwide, offering a variety of comprehensive programs.

Career Options

The majority of the students remain in the Central Texas area, teaching in public and private schools. Graduates are also qualified to become instructional coaches, education consultants, curriculum coordinators, grade level or content team leaders, directors of departments, mentor teachers or authors of textbooks. Students are also prepared for doctoral study at Texas State or another qualified university.

Program Faculty

Faculty have primarily focused their research on teacher preparation and development, teacher induction and mentoring, and learning in field-based settings. They have made national and international presentations on these topics at the Association of Teacher Educators and the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education conferences. Their work has been published in journals such as the Journal of Teacher Education, Action in Teacher Education and Educational Leadership.
