Program Overview

The M.H.A. program enhances the career mobility of students at any stage of their careers in healthcare administration. The traditional M.H.A. program, which is in a hybrid format, is geared toward students entering or in the early phase of their healthcare careers.

The Executive M.H.A. program is fully online and is designed for professionals with at least five years of experience in the industry. The primary focus of the curriculum is middle to senior-level management.

Course Work

The M.H.A. program requires a total of 40-42 credit hours. This includes core courses and either a field experience or a thesis in the synchronous face-to-face format/ synchronous online format. The Executive concentration is offered in an accelerated asynchronous online format. Principal areas of study include health and disease, sociological, economic, legal, and political forces affecting healthcare as well as management and organizational behavior with specializations in financial management, human resource management, strategic management and marketing, information system management, quality improvement, and quantitative analysis.

The Executive concentration is offered completely online. If you are not a Texas resident and will not relocate, please visit the Office of Distance and Extended Learning. International applicants will not be eligible to receive a Form I-20 or DS-2019 for an F-1 or J-1 visa from Texas State and may review the eligibility requirements of enrolling in online programs and contact the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) with questions.

Program Details

Texas State's Master of Healthcare Administration program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) since 1992.

Program Mission

The mission of the School of Health Administration at Texas State University is to prepare leaders to serve in a variety of diverse healthcare environments and to add to the body of knowledge in healthcare management and leadership. The vision of the School of Health Administration is to be the health administration school of choice for students, faculty, alumni and employers. The school values and teaches leadership, service, scholarship, professionalism, and lifelong learning.

Career Options

M.H.A. graduates of both formats generally work in mid-level and senior-level management positions in areas such as operational and strategic management, business development, quality performance management and systems management, among others. Graduates find careers in a variety of settings ranging from acute care hospitals, integrated health networks, ambulatory care, specialty services and products organizations, and public and community health organizations.

The School’s award-winning and diverse faculty bring rich experiential and educational depth to the classroom. Faculty conduct research in wide-ranging areas such as veteran’s health, life-course and aging, leadership effectiveness, human resource metrics, health information technology, bioethics, healthcare quality, core competencies, long term care administration, hospital finance, managed-care systems, operational research, public health, health law, health disparities, chronic disease management.

Admission Requirements

    • baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university (Non-U.S. degrees must be equivalent to a four-year U.S. Bachelor’s degree. In most cases, three-year degrees are not considered. Visit our International FAQs for more information.)
    • a copy of an official transcript from each institution where course credit was granted
    • a 2.75 overall GPA or a 2.75 GPA in your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work (plus any completed graduate courses)

    Applicants are required to submit an approved English proficiency exam score that meets the minimum program requirements below unless they have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a country on our exempt countries list.

    • official TOEFL iBT scores required with a 85 overall
    • official PTE scores required with a 57 overall
    • official IELTS (academic) scores required with a 6.5 overall and
      • minimum individual module scores of 6.0
    • official Duolingo scores required with a 115 overall
    • official TOEFL Essentials scores with a 9.5 overall
