How It Works

Preliminary Round

The Preliminary Round consists of recorded presentations that will be reviewed by judges and a virtual audience to advance top-scoring participants to the University Final. Presenters will be randomly divided into three groups. In each group, three presenters will be advanced based on official judges' scores, and the fourth presenter will be chosen by the university community through online voting (People's Choice Winner).

For more information, see the Preliminary Round section of this page.

University Final Competition

The University Final is live and in person. Awards at the University Final Competition include first place and runner-up (awarded by judges) and People's Choice (awarded by the audience). First place and runner-up winners can also win the People's Choice Award.

For more information, see the University Final section of this page.

Eligibilty

Graduate students currently enrolled in a Texas State University research Ph.D. or Ed.D. program and master's students on a thesis track are eligible to compete. The presentation must include findings/outcomes of research, i.e., you cannot present your proposal; you must have at least preliminary or pilot study findings. Before signing up to participate in this year's competition, we advise that you talk to your committee chair about your intent.

You can find more eligibility information on our 3MT® FAQ page.

Presentation Rules

  • Your presentation must be three minutes or less
  • You can only use one, static, PowerPoint slide (widescreen or 16:9 format) to aid your presentation
  • No additional props are permitted

To see all presentation rules, visit our Presentation Rules and Judging Criteria page (also review the judging criteria to make sure your presentation is hitting on all the points needed!).

Preliminary Round

In the Preliminary Round, 3MT® presentations will be recorded using the YouStar Studios in Alkek Library on the San Marcos campus. During your recording session, you will have three chances to present your 3MT® speech.

For each Preliminary Round recording day, there will be several 30-minute time slots available. To record your presentation, you will need to select a date and time The Graduate College has reserved at the studio. You can only select one date and time to meet with The Graduate College and do your recording. Any recordings you do on your own will not be eligible to show in the 3MT® competition. In your recording session, Ashley Carrington, Student Development Specialist II at The Graduate College, will assist you. Available dates and times for recording will be sent to you via email.

Once you have completed your three tries during the recording session, you will select which recording you would like the judges and the People’s Choice voting to see. You will not be permitted to watch these recordings back and you must select your recording before leaving your recording session.

After registration closes, you will be contacted to choose a time slot to record your Preliminary Round in Alkek One YouStar Studios.

  • Before you arrive at your Preliminary Round recording session, please see the following tasks to complete and tips that can help you prepare for your presentation:

    • Send your 3MT® PowerPoint slide (16:9 format) to the3mt@txstate.edu
    • Book your 3MT® Preliminary Round recording session. (The Graduate College will reach out via email for you to book a session.)
    • REMINDER: for your 3MT® presentation, you are only permitted one static PowerPoint slide to go along with your speech. No props, costumes, electronic media, etc. are allowed in your presentation. Please see presentation rules for more information.
    • Review this video that will demonstrate what to expect at the preliminary round.
    • Reserve a time on your own or with friends at YouStar Studios to get familiar with the space. For questions about reserving your own time at the YouStar Studios, contact Kira Wright at kirawright@txstate.edu.
    • See the judging criteria and presentation rules to ensure your speech follows the guidelines.
    • Watch previous 3MT® Texas State winners to see how they organized and delivered their presentations.
    • Wear professional clothing for your Preliminary Recording that you are comfortable in and avoid the following colors: bright green or maroon/burgundy. Because YouStar Studios has a green screen we will be using, bright green clothing may blend in. We will also be projecting a maroon/burgundy color background over the green screen, so clothing this color can also blend in. If you need assistance finding professional attire, check out Career Services’ Career Closet service. You can borrow professional clothing for this special event, then bring it back free of charge!
    • PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Practice with friends, family, colleagues, your mirror, etc.!
  • Once each competitor has completed their recordings and selected which one they would like to be seen, the Preliminary Round judging and People’s Choice voting will take place in Fall 2024.

For the Preliminary Round, competitors will be broken up into three random groups. From each group, the judges will decide the top master’s presentation, top doctoral presentation, and the overall runner up, and the Texas State community will vote online to select the People’s Choice winner. Therefore, four competitors from each group, will advance to the University Final.

  • Awarded by judges:

    • First place – $200
    • Second place – $150
    • Runner-up – $100

    Awarded by audience:

    • People’s Choice – $100

University Final

Unlike the Preliminary Round, your 3MT® presentation will be delivered in front of a live audience on a stage. There will be two large monitors on both sides of the stage showing your slide behind you. While you are presenting you will not be able to see these screens. Instead, there will be a small control monitor at the front of the stage that will show your slide that you can quickly glance down and refer to as needed.

Like the Preliminary Round, a Graduate College staff member will be monitoring the time of your presentation and a three-minute timer will be in your view. The staff member will be sitting towards the front of the stage, and you will have the option of viewing the timer or not.

You will be wearing a lavalier microphone towards the top of your torso, so you will not have to project your voice or shout while presenting. Finally, this event will be recorded, and we will post the videos of the first place, runner-up, and People’s Choice winners’ recordings on our 3MT® webpage.

  • At the final, the following awards will be given out:

    • First place - $1,000
    • Runner-up - $500
    • People’s Choice - $500

In contrast to the Preliminary Round, for the People’s Choice, guests must be present at the event during the voting to submit a vote. We will not be doing online voting, and anyone who leaves before the voting starts will be unable to vote.

Also different from the Preliminary Round, if you win first place or runner-up, you are still eligible to win the People’s Choice award.

  • The Graduate College recommends wearing business attire for this event. You can expect to wear a lapel microphone while on stage that The Graduate College will provide and will help you attach to your clothing.

When choosing what to wear, think about where Graduate College staff can clip a lapel microphone as well as the transmitter pack.

    • If you opt for a dress, you might want to consider belting it, so we can hook the transmitter pack on it in the back.
    • The safer choice is to wear separates. Wearing a jacket can hide the pack in the back and hook the actual mic on the lapel.  The pack can be attached to the waistband of skirts or pants.
    • Anything with a V-neck or buttons down the front is preferable to a high-necked shirt. A high neckline may force the microphone to be placed in an awkward angle under the chin, which might muffle the sound.
    • The fabric of the shirt also plays a role. A silk blouse or a thin sweater may fold under the weight of the microphone, resulting in a rustling sound. Opt for a heavier fabric that will maintain its structure when the microphone is clipped on and won’t buckle if you move during the course of your presentation.

If you need to change when you arrive, there are bathrooms close to the ballroom. Also, there will be an area where you can leave your personal items while you are presenting.

If you need help finding business attire, check out the Career Closet offered through Career Services, where you can rent clothes for free!

  • There are a few parking options around the LBJ Student Center, including permit and pay-to-park. For permit options, please view the Parking Services San Marcos map. For pay-to-park options, we recommend using the LBJ Student Center garage, which is right next to the LBJ Student Center. To see rates of the pay-to-park options, please see the Visitors Parking page.

  • Here are some final notes to keep in mind as you prepare for your 3MT® presentation:

    1. No one knows your script except you! If you find yourself stuck on stage, remember this competition is about explaining your research. Do your best to try and keep going even if you get stuck – just continue to tell us about your research and its impact!
    2. If you do decide to view the timer and if you are getting close to 3 minutes, don’t disqualify yourself by trying to finish your speech and accidentally go over the time. Say “Thank you” before it hits the “0:00” mark that way your presentation will still be eligible for judging + People’s Choice.
    3. Try and avoid using jargon and if you do, make sure to explain it.
    4. The real-world impact of your research is a very important part the judges want to know about, so give yourself time to talk about that.
    5. We do recommend saying “thank you” at the end of your presentation so that there is a clear end to it.
    6. Once again, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Practice in situations where you are slightly uncomfortable so that you can work on getting through your speech in distracting situations. Practice in front of people as much as possible and get their feedback, too.
    7. Finally, have fun with this process! Invite your friends, family members, professors, and colleagues! Everyone wants you to succeed and will enjoy hearing about your research and watching you present!
